Comic Book Covers EVERYWHERE!

December 5, 2012

Covers. Comic book covers, to be exact. They are one of the most important parts of a book, besides the story inside, and I had to do three. I went into this assignment thinking that I was supposed to complete the two that I designed. That was not the case. One original comic book cover was supposed to be inked while the other was supposed to be done by another student.

So why did I have to do three comic book covers? Well, let’s just say I inked the one that was assigned to my fellow student. Oh well.

Bound To Ramble – Pencilled by Moses Nester, inked traditionally by Dane Cypel
Scribe – Pencilled and inked digitally by Dane Cypel
Technomancer #3 – Pencilled digitally, inked traditionally by Dane Cypel

Final Project – SEQA 502

December 5, 2012

Final Projects are not fun to do. They generally have to be completed in a short amount of time but require the most work to do. While this final had a good chunk of time, there was a lot still to do. And I had fun doing it.

The final project involved taking a script written by a second-year MFA student and developing four pages further. I received Scribe, by Jeremy Lawson and we had to work with the writer during this process. Now here is the amusing thing, I was given a lot of freedom in developing characters and styles. I was told that the project was a fantasy setting with magic. Ok. So I decided to change it up. I set it in a world that would be a mix of Colonial and Napoleonic styles. The characters would have guns and use them when they needed. I didn’t want it to look like the generic fantasy that is usually out there.

On critique day, the second-years came in with their professor to look over our final projects. The professor sat there and looked over my work and asked, “Jeremy, this is very different from what you’ve done.” When Jeremy then replied, “Yeah, it’s supposed to be a kids book, but I like this.”

One of the characters, was supposed to be an orc with three fingers, by the way. I didn’t know…

A Scooby Doo Comic…

October 24, 2012

I am not a fan of Scooby Doo. I never enjoyed the cartoon and I have no connection to the characters besides Scooby being a great Dane. The stories are all the same, and there is no real draw for me. If I had a chance to redesign the characters, setting, and overall story, I would LOVE that. Scooby Doo COULD be cool. Maybe a monster hunting team that actually encounters real monsters? COOL. Scooby being a talking dog with his stoner friend: not cool, in my opinion.

In this assignment, we had to draw three pages on model. Meaning the characters had to be as close as possible to their 1970′s version. We were not allowed to deviate or change anything. So here they are, the inked versions of this Scooby Doo story. Ugh. At least it’s over.

Wyatt Earp and Black Placement

October 24, 2012

Wyatt Earp, from what I know, was a cool guy. He had a snazzy moustache and liked keeping it orderly. Well, we had to draw several panels from a script titled ROWDIES by Chuck Dixon. This first set of panels introduces the reader to Wyatt who comes into town on horseback amidst a storm. Like any Western there are three drunks who decide to do the stupid thing and threaten him. I only had to do two pages, and in the later ones, Mr. Earp gives the three a good beating. But here are the two pages I did for ROWDIES. Enjoy.

Inking the Hulk

October 11, 2012

Inking is surprisingly relaxing. When I walk to class I usually think about inking instead of penciling. Though I prefer to pencil, there’s so much more to worry about. Is the perspective correct? Do the characters look the way they are supposed to? Does the panel flow well? When I ink, everything is already on the page; all I have to do is trace. (hah) And it’s also much more fun to ink than to worry about getting mugged on the street. (Supposedly that’s happened to other people often around here.)

But here was an assignment that is due next week. Hell yeah for getting work done early. The penciled image was done by Geoff Shaw.

Y: The Last Man and Six Pages of Comic Awesomeness

October 9, 2012

Y: The Last Man is an excellent book. Written by Brian K Vaughn and drawn by Pia Guerra, it chronicles the wackiness of being the only man alive on Earth who also has a pet monkey. Well, in one of my graduate classes, we had to take six pages from the Ring of Truth chapter and develop them further. We did thumbnails to tight roughs. The full 22 pages of this chapter of Y: The Last Man were divided by the 9 or so of us. I had to take pages 13 to 18 which included a chase scene down a San Francisco street. Let me also say that drawing a scene on a hill is not fun.

Inking Awesomeness

October 5, 2012

Inking was never my specialty. And today, I had to ink. With a brush.

When I’ve inked in the past it was done digitally in Corel Painter. Today was the first time I used a brush to ink a picture. What made this exercise even more daunting was that the image we had to ink was done by Bryan Hitch.

We started this in class and I finished this several hours later.

Static Shock Tight Roughs

September 27, 2012

The Static Shock project progressed further. The next step was to take our roughs and fix them up. To take them and make them all pretty and fancy. Instead of a Static Shock outline, we had to make him look like Static Shock. Instead of some lines as the background, we had to make a believable space. And we only had a couple more days to do this. This is what I came up with. I present, Static Shock Tight Roughs. Enjoy.

The one thing about grad school is that no matter how awesome you think your pages are, there’s ALWAYS something that can be improved. There were numerous things I could have changed an made better, especially in this batch of Static Shock pages. I had fun while making these too, even though I spent a lot of time working on them.

SCAD Grad School Begins

September 27, 2012

Grad school has been an experience. We are only three weeks in and the work has been non-stop. Fun. But non-stop.

I decided to do grad school at SCAD to not only get a Masters of Fine Arts degree, but to work on things I haven’t worked on in the past. I never took art classes, which looking back, allowed me to skip certain things. Being in art school now, is allowing me to refine my craft. It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of WORTHY work.

I wanted to show some of the thing’s we’ve been working on. Myself and the other first year Sequential Art badasses have been making some amazing comic art, so it’s time it was shown.

These pieces are from a project where we had to develop four pages of a Static Shock script. Here are the roughs:
